Welcome

Shepherd David Kennard farms on the beautiful and rugged coast of North Devon, a coastline that is renowned as one of the most spectacular in Britain. Working with his team of sheepdogs, he looks after a flock of 800 ewes together with their 1200 lambs.

With the farm income in decline, David looked for other ways to sustain his living, and in 2000, he made a film about his life as a shepherd, and the work of his collies Greg, Swift, Gail, Fern and Ernie. 'The Year of the Working Sheepdog' follows twelve months of their working life together.

With cliff top storms, the dramas of the lambing season and the initiation of young pups, the film proved a resounding success and has sold over 70,000 copies worldwide.

In 2004 David put the success of his film into words, with the publication of his first book 'A Shepherd's Watch'. With it's gentle tales of the ups and downs of a shepherd's life it has been described as 'one man and his dog meets James Herriot'. 'A Shepherd's Watch' became a Sunday Times top ten bestseller soon after publication, and has been published in the USA and in German translation.

'The Dogs of Windcutter Down' David's second book was published in October 2005. Starting with the problems of the post foot and mouth era, there are more humorous tales of the characters of country life, both human and four-legged.

David and his dogs can be seen in action during the summer, at weekly sheepdogs displays that he holds at his farm in North Devon. See displays
